Ep #13: Future Tripping
Overthinking is such a sneaky, anxiety-fueling habit. When we overthink about the future — which I call future tripping — we can temporarily relieve our anxiety, because we think we’re going to be able to control the future. Which, once you think about it, is totally illogical — none of us can control every aspect of the future, and trying to usually makes us feel stressed out and anxiety-ridden.
Thus, future tripping is rooted in anxiety and also causes it. What a cycle, huh? This can be especially difficult to deal with if you haven’t yet learned how to manage your mind. But the good news is, there are ways to break the future tripping thought pattern, and that’s what I’m sharing today.
In this episode I talk about what future tripping is, why it can be so difficult to stop, and tips for creating new thoughts grounded in your day-to-day existence — not some future that’s spinning out of control. I also give you a step-by-step process for noticing your future tripping and how to gently guide yourself away from overthinking. And don’t forget to bring your journal — one of the best antidotes for future tripping!
What You’ll Learn:
- How future tripping is both rooted in and fuel for anxiety.
- Why it’s so tempting for our brain to spin out about the future.
- How our expectations for and desire to control the future set us up for hard times.
- Why it’s important to stay grounded in your daily to-dos and keep taking action.
- How to refocus on today and catch yourself in the middle of a future trip.
- Two of my favorite tools for combatting future tripping — tools that you have access to at virtually any moment.
